You will not get bored easily in Friesland. There is much to do and experience. It is an active province. Other places worth visiting are Harlingen, Stavoren and Hindeloopen. Friesland is also known for the Elfstedentocht. Four of the five Wadden Islands also belong to Friesland. Friesland is easily accessible by public transport, but also via motorways or the Afsluitdijk.
Leeuwarden is the capital of the province of Friesland. The city is known for its historic city center. The Oldehove tower is probably the most famous building in the city center. The Oldehove tower is also called the Dutch tower of Pisa. The canals in the city give it a charm. In Leeuwarden you can succeed in hunting for bargains and there is a vibrant nightlife. Leeuwarden is also known for being the birthplace of artist M.C. Escher. In terms of museums, you can visit the nature museum Fryslân, the Fries Museum and the Ceramics Museum in Leeuwarden. Furthermore, the flower market takes place every year on Ascension Day.
Heerenveen is a truly Frisian place. Heerenveen has several historic streets and buildings. One of the monuments that you should definitely not miss is "De Crackstate". A beautiful building surrounded by a moat, built in 1648 by Johannes Sytses Crack. Today, such "stins", namely fortresses or country houses, are used as town halls and wedding halls. And the "Oenemastate" located on the town square is a beautiful "stins" whose history dates back to 1640. This building is also worth a visit! In addition, it now has a beautiful café, so you can combine your tour with a cup of coffee or a typical Frisian herbal liqueur. Finally, the famous "Welgelegen Mill" is also a monument that you can visit. The factory used to be a maize, grain and husk factory and has been the only remaining factory in a series of 17 factories in Heerenveen since the 15th century. But, in addition to its rich history, Heerenveen is also a good place to shop.
In Sneek everything revolves around water sports, at least a lot. It is the water sports capital of Friesland. The skûtsjesilen championship takes place here, these are sailing competitions. The largest inland water event in Europe also takes place here. This is the Sneekweek. The Sneekweek takes place every year in August. The atmosphere of the Sneekweek is just as well known as the sailing competitions themselves. Several festive activities are organized.
Harlingen is one of the Elfstedentocht cities. It is the port city of Friesland. You can view the harbor, canals and old warehouses here. In the summer it is usually pleasantly busy in Harlingen. The annual Harlinger Fishing Days are also held there. During these days, the city is all about celebration and you can enjoy music, funfair and gastronomy. From Harlingen you can also take the ferry to the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland.
When you visit Hindeloopen you step back in time. It is a shipping town on the banks of the IJsselmeer. The center of the old town has a clear labyrinth, of old streets, canals and wooden bridges, which can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Hindeloopen is one of the Elfstedentocht cities. The great thing about Hindeloopen is that the traditions are still fully honored.
Some call Workum the most beautiful town of the Elfstedentocht cities. Workum has beautiful facades, monumental buildings and a water-rich environment. For art lovers there is the Jopie Huisman Museum. In the Jopie Huisman Museum you meet the most famous Workum resident. Jopie Huisman is a self-taught painter, known for his realistic works.
