The southern province of North Brabant is the second largest province in the Netherlands after Gelderland. About 2.5 million people live there. The capital of North Brabant is Den Bosch, but there are also other cities to visit such as Eindhoven or Breda. Outside the cities you will find a lot of nature in North Brabant.
Cities in North Brabant
Most Brabant residents live in cities. The four largest cities of Den Bosch, Eindhoven, Tilburg and Breda are an extension of each other. Smaller cities are Roosendaal and Helmond.
Den Bosch is the capital of North Brabant, but it is not the largest city in the province. Due to its versatility, this city will not quickly disappoint. For culture enthusiasts there are museums, cruises and city walks. You are in the center at the St. John's Cathedral or the town hall of Den Bosch. Shopaholics can go to the various shopping streets. The children will have a great time in various activities. What should not be forgotten in between is that you can enjoy snacks and drinks in a cozy café and restaurant in the center of the city.
Eindhoven is the fifth largest city in the Netherlands. Above all, it is a challenging city in terms of technology, design and knowledge. Eindhoven is, thanks to Philips, the city of the light bulb. It's a different city from others. You really feel the industrial and the developments in the design area make the city real. An annual event is Glow Eindhoven. Every year a route is set out where you walk past several light shows and lighting. Glow is getting more popular every year and is expanding every year.
Tilburg is typically Brabantian. For shopping you can succeed in the Dwaal area. There are large chains, but also small boutiques. You are also in the right place for a good lunch, a cozy terrace or a nice dinner. The big annual attraction of Tilburg is the Tilburg fair. This is the largest fair in the entire Benelux and attracts around 1.5 million visitors every year. The fair takes place for ten days in the month of July. Other attractions are the TextielMuseum and Vincent van Gogh's Art Room.
Breda is a cozy, Burgundian and above all pleasant city. You will find several terraces that are close to each other. You can also go here for shopping. You will find beautiful monuments from the Nassau Period such as the Grote Kerk, the Begijnhof and Breda Castle. For a beautiful nature walk you can go to the Mastbos. Near the Mastbos you will find the Castle Bouvigne, a beautiful castle on the water. Behind the Mastbos you will find the Galderse Meren, where it is wonderful to stay in the summer.
Nature in North Brabant
Noord-Brabant offers various nature reserves. No fewer than four national parks lie within the boundaries of this province. In Brabant you can therefore perfectly combine a city with nature. There are wide moors with beautiful views and extensive forests to special wetlands. The nature reserves you will find are the Biesbosch, the Groote Peel, the Loonse duinen and the Drunense duinen.
Biesbosch in North Brabant
The Biesbosch National Park is the largest freshwater tidal area in Europe. You can do all kinds of things. For example, sail along the forests, kayak in winding creeks, walk on rugged paths and cycle on open grass full of water birds. In the Biesbosch you might also come across a few beavers.
de Groote Peel
De Groote Peel is located on the border of Limburg and North Brabant. The Peel area is one of the most bird-rich nature reserves in Western Europe. You will find a lot of swamp, open moors, quiet woods and rugged sandy areas.
The Loonse and Drunense dunes
This national park is located between Tilburg, Waalwijk and Den Bosch. The Loonse and Drunense dunes together with other small nature reserves form the national park. The dunes give beautiful views. It is the largest drifting sand area in all of Western Europe.
Other sights and activities in North Brabant
In addition to the cities and national parks, Noord-Brabant has even more to offer. For example, you will find one of the most popular attractions in the entire country in North Brabant. Efteling attracts more than five million tourists every year. The Efteling is the largest amusement park in the Netherlands and is especially unique because of the fairytale forest. You will also find the Beekse Bergen Safari Park near Tilburg. In this safari park you have the opportunity to walk through the zoo, but there is also a part where you can actually go on safari by car.
